In September, a pair of our senior Towne Group consultants, Terry Turner and Kristy Cooper, gave presentations at the “Tech to Tell Your Story” conference of Maryland Nonprofits in Baltimore. They discussed two topics of importance to nonprofit organizations.
Visual Approaches to Social Media (Terry Turner)
Terry described an array of successful approaches to help organizations establish more resonant social media reputations by adopting vivid visual storytelling techniques. His advice to attendees: appeal to stakeholders’ emotional and aesthetic—rather than merely logical—faculties, use photography liberally and be sure to include thought leadership themes in social outreach.
Online Engagement Using Third Party Helper Apps (Kristy Cooper}
In her session Kristy led a ‘cook’s tour’ of available 3rd party helpers that are free (or almost free) for the institutional user. Among other approaches she described how to build or revitalize an institutional website with inexpensive template/development approaches (e.g., SquareSpace, Wix, Weebly, JimDo, Webnode). He also covered how to automate social media outreach, implement effective “social listening”, add a newsletter and stakeholder surveys to the mix, and many other approaches—all for a relatively minimal cost compared to custom approaches.
